How to resync your phone to collect new data

How to run a resync to update an existing phone backup and capture new messages or data since the initial collection.

If new messages or data have appeared on a phone since the initial collection, you can run a resync to capture them. A resync replaces the existing local backup with a current snapshot of the phone's data. It is typically much faster than the initial collection.

To resync, you must still have the original backup file saved on your computer or external drive. If the backup was saved to an external drive, make sure it is plugged in before opening the case. If you no longer have the original backup file, you will need to run a new collection instead — see How to run an iPhone backup or How to run an Android backup.

Step 1: Open the case in the Hearsay Extractor

Open the Hearsay Extractor and click Open next to your case name under Last Opened.

If you do not see the case listed, click See History to view previous backups. If the backup was completed on a different computer or the original save location has changed, click Find Existing Backup.

Step 2: Click Sync Device

Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable, then click the Sync Device button.

Step 3: Confirm and start the sync

A confirmation prompt will appear. Click Start Sync to begin.

Note: If the sync fails, local backup data on your computer will be deleted. Data already uploaded to the portal is safe and will not be affected.

Step 4: Enter your passcode and wait for the backup to complete

Follow the on-screen instructions and enter your pin to grant permission for the backup to begin.

Once the progress bar appears, the sync is running. A resync is typically much faster than the initial collection. Do not unplug your phone until the backup completes.

Step 5: Search, select, and share

After the sync completes, the conversation list will appear. The phone no longer needs to be plugged in. Any conversations that were previously shared and contain new messages since the last backup will be flagged with a NEW MESSAGES badge.

Search for and select the conversations you want to share, then click Share conversations. For detailed instructions on searching, selecting, and sharing, see How to upload specific text message threads.
