How to turn off backup encryption (iPhone)

How to disable iPhone backup encryption when prompted during a Hearsay Extractor collection, including steps if you forgot your encryption password.

If your iPhone has backup encryption enabled, the Hearsay Extractor will detect it and display a notification during the collection setup. Follow these steps to turn off encryption so the collection can proceed with a standard (unencrypted) backup.

Note: Turning off encryption does not erase any data on your phone. It only changes how backups are stored.

Step 1: Click "Turn off encryption"

When the Hearsay Extractor detects that your iPhone has backup encryption enabled, a yellow notification appears at the bottom of the backup setup screen.

Click the Turn off encryption link on the right side of the notification.

Step 2: Enter your encryption password

On the Disable Backup Encryption screen, enter your encryption password and click the Turn Off Encryption button. You may be prompted to enter your PIN on your phone to complete the process.

Step 3: Confirm and return to the collection

Once the encryption password is accepted, you'll see a green confirmation: "Backup encryption has been disabled on this device." Click Done to return to the backup setup screen and continue with your collection.

Don't remember your encryption password?

If you can't remember it, you can reset it without erasing your data.

Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. View Apple Support article.

This resets the backup password (and other settings like Wi-Fi) but keeps your data.
